Well I need some advise for a decent sound system for my PC. I’ve been doing some upgrades, nearly at a gig of ram, new Plextor DVD RW.
My sound board is pretty standard, built into the Motherboard, which is now discontinued. Says somethign about 6 channel audio but it really doesn’t meet my needs as the white noise is pretty bad.
What I’d like to do next is do a hard drive upgrade, probably up to 200 gigs, new speakers and new sound system. Just don’t know what sound system to get. Something I can play with, with input options.
Nothing as fancy as what Neb has, but something high end for the layman.

I’ve been meaning to upgrade to a DVD RW and I was looking at the Plextor. I have a Plextor CD RW now and it’s nice. I also want dual flat screens and a projector but I’m lazy.
It’s 6.1 channel. You need to adjust the Master AND Wav volumes and turn down the speakers themselves. I still haven’t mastered keeping white noise away but I can adjust for it.
I’m thinking about unloading everything I have for just a computer. “Sound/Entertainment system” wise.
Neb has NOTHING fancy. He’s got Myth on a box that screams louder then the TV.
I was referring to whatever the hell he has down stairs. To complicated for me.
The Plextor’s are good. 129 at best buy with a 30 rebate.
When I worked for Adaptec, my buddy worked in the test lab, at the time he was testing the EZCD, now a Roxio product.
All the manufacturer’s sent their drives to be tested with the software and the Plextors just burried the hell out of everyone else. At that time a Plextor CD R was going for about 400, much more affordable now.
I still go with Plextor’s, I just remember reading the test reports and for anyone series about CD burning and duplication there was no other option, they came out that far ahead.
I took off the side and looked at the motherboard last night, still not convinced the sound system is easy to use. I need to download the manual and look again. I’d like something where I can have at least 3 internal connections from the CD/DVD drives. As of now the internal connections are 4 pronged on the board inputs and two pronged on the Drives, which doesn’t do me any good, I guess I can search around for cables that are compatible.
This sound system from Logitech would meet my needs for speakers. 5.1 THX with Wired remote for around 140. Still searching for a better sound card.
I like this one and this one. Audigy 2 ZS platinum and platinum pro. trying to figure out what the differences are.
All I need is video with component input and I can edit Guys Night one. Make one copy that is decent and another copy to blackmail bartenders.
If you’re doing 5.1 and looking for a card I would reccomend the M-audio Revolution (http://www.midiman.com/products/en_us/Revolution51-main.html). Its fairly inexpensive for the output sample rate and bit depth. Its only stereo input I think, so it really wouldnt do anything for recording, but hooked up to a decent 5.1 system it should sound very clean.
Downstairs in the living room or downstairs in the basement?
I don’t like rebates. I like 30 bucks off but, not for all my personal information.
You’re confussing me when you say “sound system”. Just say speakers and sound card. I don’t understand how staring at the motherboards makes it hard for you to plug in the speakers to the on-board audio.
Also, this 4 pronged do-hicky. You mean the CD audio cable (CD-Rom to sound card)? If so, they make those in Y cables.
There is only one audio jack (output). The speakers need to be plugged in at one place (lets say central unit or as it is today subwoofer) then the subwoofer is plugged into the audio jack.
Downstairs in the basement.

And for this you had to open the case and stare at the motherboard? Also, since there is only one audio jack, as always, I dont see how you’re “still not convinced the sound system is easy to use”.

Yea, that’s more for recording and not so much playback.
Thanks Neb, I was looking for something that handles input as well.
Boof,
Remember the sound system that I had hooked up to the computer when I
lived on Van Dorn St.?

Well it does input at pro sample rates, but only two channels at once. If you wanted to record more than two distinct sources in parrallel the audigys are decent, but a little bit overkill feature wise unless you are doing midi automation. The internal breakout is nice though. A Delta 44 is somewhere in between the Revolution and the Audigy, but a slightly lower sampling rate. Sampling rate doesnt make much difference once its above 48khz unless you are doing multiple effects processing operations on the original wave though.
Neb, ust a simple “All gamers buy their Audigy’s from Best Buy” would had been just fine. Funny how much information is crammed into that beer guzzling head of yours.
P.S. I picked up that Plextor DVD+RW today. Two Samsung 910T’s are next.
