Joe Gibbs Retires, Again

As even a shook to me, Gibbs retires with a year left on his five year contract. After a four win streak at the end of the season against top teams like the Giants, Vikings and even the Cowboys, to push them in to the playoffs, I thought for sure Gibbs saved his own ass. What’s done is done. I just hope AHC Al Saunders doesn’t become the new head coach.

I guess its back to Charolette, NC and NASCAR. After all, he is 67. Maybe it is time to retire, relax and be a grandparent.

As for those who didn’t know. Gibbs went 124-60 during the regular season and 16-5 during the playoffs during his first tenure with the Redskins. He won Super Bowls following the 1982, 1987 and 1991 seasons with three different quarterbacks.

He retired for 11 years.

During his second tenure. Gibbs came aways with a 31-36 record, with two playoff appearances.

His final career totals: 171-101, including 17-7 in the playoffs, a career .629 winning percentage that ranks third all-time behind George Halas and Don Shula among coaches with more than 125 wins.

I also heard a rumor that a coach who worked for LSU and has the last name of Jones will be taking over for him. I’m so out of the loop, though.

  2. boofer says:

LSU’s head coach is Les Miles. I also don’t think he’s not leaving LSU.

So far the rumors are Gregg Williams or Bill Cowher.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has confirmed that if and when Joe Gibbs retires, Williams will get a $1 million bonus if he is still on staff and is not named as Gibbs’ successor.

    Or…

Money was one of the reasons Cowher resigned from the Steelers last January and, Dan has lots of money.

Other big names looking for work:

Former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick.

Current assistant head coach in San Francisco, Mike Singletary, who has interviewed for several head coaching jobs.

Current assistant head coach in Indianapolis, Jim Caldwell.

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who is a candidate in Baltimore and Atlanta.

Both Singletary and Caldwell would fulfill “the Rooney rule,” which mandates that NFL teams must interview at least one minority candidate.

  4. boofer says:

OK, forgot all of those people. Rumor now is that Gregg Williams is the front-runner and Indianapolis assistant coaches Ron Meeks and Jim Caldwell could be the next interviews. Both are also top candidates to replace Colts Coach Tony Dungy should he retire. Caldwell met with the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens about their openings last week. Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz interviewed Thursday, and Snyder on Friday met with a second candidate whose name hasn’t been made public.

  5. boofer says:

Jim Fassel has become a top candidate for the Washington Redskins coaching job after a third interview with owner Dan Snyder.

Snyder has interviewed five potential successors: Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, Seattle Seahawks defensive backs coach Jim Mora, Redskins assistant Gregg Williams and Fassel.

Fassel, 58, took the Giants to the Super Bowl following the 2000 season and went 60-56-1, including 2-3 in the playoffs, during seven seasons in New York. He was the AP’s NFL coach of the year in 1997, when he led the Giants to an 11-5-1 record as a rookie head coach.

Fassel was fired following a 4-12 season in 2003 and became a senior consultant to the Baltimore Ravens staff in 2004. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2005 but was fired in October 2006 in a midseason shake-up by coach Brian Billick when the Ravens were struggling offensively.

Although he has frequently been mentioned as a coaching candidate for several teams and has had multiple interviews, Fassel spent this season away from the sideline, working as an analyst for CBS Radio Sports/Westwood One.
The Washington Redskins late Wednesday denied reports that they are close to hiring Jim Fassel as their new head coach.

ESPN.com quotes unnamed team sources as saying the club has not decided on Fassel to replace Joe Gibbs and that it might still interview assistant coaches from the Super Bowl teams. Such a delay could put Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo into contention. The Giants have denied other teams permission to speak with Spagnuolo while the Giants are still playing.

Reports also say assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams remains a top candidate to replace Gibbs.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reported early Wednesday on its website that a Fassel deal was close but that no contract had been finalized. Later Wednesday, the paper said the team had not scheduled a news conference to announce a coaching hiring.

The club did interview Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn on Wednesday for its offensive coordinator position, a post currently held by Al Saunders. Washington also is reportedly interested in Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan to replace Williams as the man in charge of the defense.
Jim Zorn in place of Al Saunders is a big improvement in my eyes.

    Back to square one.

Welp it’s over. And, in shocking fashion.

02/09/2008 Redskins name Zorn head coach
The Washington Redskins hired Jim Zorn as their coach Saturday night, a surprise ending to a monthlong search for a replacement for Joe Gibbs.

Always the energetic left-hander, Jim Zorn had an upbeat but nervous start to his coming-out event with the Washington Redskins.
