And the Winner is….

Looks like Perdue took the title in the Rube Goldberg Contest… again. Surprise!

“WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UPI) — A team of engineers from Indiana’s Purdue University have been awarded $1,000 for their creation of an elaborate 156-step hamburger-making machine.

Purdue won Saturday’s annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, a competition in which engineering students from across the country create devices to perform basic jobs with the most possible number of steps, the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal and Courier reported.

“With all the hard work we’ve put into this machine, it’s just fantastic,” said Drew Wischer, Purdue Society of Professional Engineers team captain.

More than 1,500 people attended the competition at Purdue University to watch machines from seven U.S. universities creatively assemble hamburgers with at least one meat patty, two vegetables and two condiments in a pair of buns.

The winning machine featured King Kong scaling New York’s Empire State Building, London’s Big Ben clock and the Eiffel Tower in Paris among numerous other well-known structures. “

The Llama & AdSense?!?!

So, in hopes of making millions and my general curiosity, I added Google’s ad sense to the Llama. I don’t expect anyone to ever click the ads but they are there if you need them. It’s a new feature really, if you think about it, for only a second, and then don’t remeber that I could potentially make money off of a click. If you’re using Adblock, you have no idea of what I’m talking about. Honestly, they blend right in and aren’t all flashy like porn site ads. I actually turned off Adblock when viewing the Llama only because the ads make me laugh. Google gathers info from the Llama and shows relevant ads like, “Alpacas For Sale” or “Baby Alpaca Fur Area Rugs” or “Manhattan Helicopters” or “Couture European Lingerie” or “Slimming Sassybax Bras” or “Trendy Women’s Intimates”. It’s freakin’ awesome.

The Lllama Packs Up It's Bags and Moves in with Daddy

After a loyal stint with BuyDomains, that not to long ago changed to DiscoverDomain, I’ve switch my registrar to GoDaddy. I’m now one more degree closer to Dana Patrick. Creepy, huh? Or Candice Michelle? It’s a coin toss.

Domains use to cost around $30+. BuyDomain was at $16. Apperantly they are even cheaper now. Hence the switch. I don’t think I’ll gain anything with the switch besides savings of up to or near 50%.

Fix: Rank Icons

Not that it’s important at all but I got bored at work and fixed the references to the rank icons. Plus, made some crashed admins/members rank icons. Plus I was sick of that anonymous frog icon and the Windows 3.1 trench coat silhouette icon.

Staying Connected

That’s right. I said it. Big whoop. Wanna fight about it?

The llama has had a stable uptime of over 12 hours for the first time in awhile with no sign of any 502 errors.

The main problem was the shell script that was being used to connect the llama to the unblocked internet. I created a script because my ISP blocks inbound traffic to my server. It worked, for the most part, but wasn’t pretty at all.

I’ve opted to start using something with a pretty GUI to ssh and keep the connect alive. First I tried using Internet Secure Tunneling from Han-soft and SSH Tunnel 4.0 from rs4u.com, then I found Bitvise’s Tunnelier. IST was ok, just freeware with a 30 Day trail period, which doesn’t seem free to me. SSH Tunnel was just plain confusing at first. After you setup what tunnel you wanna create, you have to reload that app to have the changes take place. Took me 20 minutes to realize that. Tunnelier is free and has everything I need and more. I advise anyone looking for an app that auto tunnels to check this one out.

On top of all that my voip router was in front of the house router. For a week or so it was dropping packets left and right. I could only sign on AIM for about 30 seconds after a router reboot. The internet was unbearably sporadic. I put my voip router back behind the other router and that seemed to stopped whatever was causing the problem.

We had put the voip router first thinking that the house traffic was taking precendence over the voip traffic because my calls would drop after a minute or so on the phone. Dragging out a 3 minute phone call in to about a 10 minute process. I found out it was the first gen cable modem Cox gave us [read:cheap bastards] had issues with the new lines they had laid.
